In Class Graph Analyzation

From the years 1995-2008 data was collected to compare the increase/decrease of Anti-Islamic hate crime incidents. Between the years 1995-2000, incidents were at its all time low. However, in the year 2001, Anti-Islamic hate crime was at its all time high. Because of 9/11 it made people hate Islamic people even more than they ever have in the past years. People believed that they were terrible people and they all had something to do with it. Innocent people were harmed because of ignorance. All because a person is Islam doesn't automatically make them a terrorist but some people didn't see it that way.  I do question the graph as to which i am getting the data from  due to the fact that it doesn't clearly state whether or not the numbers that are given are for hate crimes in thousands or just simply in hundreds.

In class Zeitoun blog

From reading the book Zeitoun, i was able to create a keyword from the text and my keyword was islamophobia. Islamophobia is a fear or hatred against Muslims or Islamic people. The fear is stronger especially when in a political force. Islamophobia plays a very important role in the book Zeitoun because there is a lot of hatred towards all Islamic people and discrimination towards their kind. Others who aren't Islamic/Muslim treat those who are as if they don't belong. Zeitoun was an Islamic/Muslim man who was trying to save the people that didn't evacuate New Orleans when the hurricane had hit. As the days go by Zeitoun was able to rescue those who needed it much faster than the military was able to. Zeitoun was living in a house with all the survivors when suddenly a knock on the door was heard and come to there surprise, military men were standing in the front door forcing all the men that were residing in the household to go into the boat. Zeitoun was calm, cool and collected. All he asked was for one moment to go back into the house to get a piece of paper that had a number on it. "He moved toward the house, smiling politely. It was everything, that number. The piece of paper was fifteen feet away. NO! the soldier yelled. He grabbed the back of Zeitoun's shirt, turned him around, and shoved him onto the boat" (206)
I feel as if the military treated them so carelessly due to the fact that they realized Zeitoun did a better job than they did and as people who are suppose to serve and protect the people they did the complete opposite. The people who found Zeitoun would be considered islamophobes because their title was being put down and their title was at stake because an Islamic man who is not considered to be part of any kind of military alliance was acting as a way that they would have been and they would find it embarrassing to say that an Islamic man was able to save all these people just in time.

Zeitoun!

In class we are currently reading a book called Zeitoun, and we all discussed different passages. In the passage that I had read about, there was a huge controversy between Zeitoun and his wife Kathy, which was circled around the question of why he would stay(50-51). A category 5 hurricane was about to hit New Orleans and they called for an evacuation throughout New Orleans. Kathy was all with it for evacuating and leaving as long as her children were going to be safe and she would as well. However, Zeitoun's decision is what cause the fight. Zeitoun decided he wanted to stay and he didn't want to evacuate. Kathy tried everything she could in order to get Zeitoun  to leave New Orleans so nothing harmful can happen to them. Kathy finally knew the answer as to why Zeitoun would  rather stay instead of fleeing. Kathy knew that because of the business that Zeitoun had run "they would be liable for damage if their equipment caused harm to clients' property. It was yet another hazard of the business they had built" ( 50). I understand Zeitouns reasoning behind him not wanting to leave mainly because sometimes there are way too many liabilities at stake if he were to abandon his business. He would be the one who would have to pay large amount of money for a large amount of damage that occurred if he decided to be absent from the scene.

Sandy Claim

Well hello there blog readers, my name is Tiffany and i'm doing this blog entry to thoroughly support my claim as to why i think that New York could have been ready for super storm Sandy, if only they had enough preparation for any kind of disaster such as the hurricane. The city's response was not as adequate as it should have been due to the fact that many lost their houses and everything that they owned. Yes the city was able to clean up the mess in a timely matter however they didn't supply too much help for those who were left homeless. The people weren't funded and those who couldn't find a place to stay after their six months in a hotel paid for by the government had expired, they were the ones who were screwed.

Super storm Sandy had an "international support" system after it had occurred. Many foundations were raising money for the cause and even celebs were contributing as well. This reminds me of a passage that I had read in Naomi Klein's The Shock Doctrine, Blanking the Beach. In the passage the tsunami that occurred in Sri Lanka was basically funded by international support (70). In the donations a total of $13 billion was raised.

Peer Reviews

I received feedback of my first draft from Tanya and Allen and from their comments they liked the questions I did ask in my paper and the voice that I had. However, it was mentioned that I need to develop my thesis and give more examples. I also was told to give direct quotes and to use more references towards the book. The steps that I would take in order to revise my paper is, im going to work on my thesis as well as using the book more often in my paper.
The only concern that I have is finishing the paper on time because of my busy work schedule and writing it in a way where i can use a regular voice and also keeping it proffesional. What i do need from class is assitance in writing out a clear thesis. The type of help that i will probable use is abusing office ours whenever i have the time to.

Quote Sandwhich: New York Times

New York is not prepared for climate change due to the fact that we weren't even prepared for Hurricane Sandy. If New York was really prepared we wouldn't have huge destruction in New York and we wouldn't be struggling to find money to fix the devastating events that occurred. Accurate preparation would have been proof to the people of New York that we are safe from any kind of disaster such as Hurricane Sandy.
In the article Douglas Hill mentions that we do "lack a sense of urgency about this" (Navarro). And i completely agree with this statement for the fact that instead of ignoring the possibilities of natural disasters, city officials should have been more open minded so in that way they would have been able to prep for anything and everything. New York is "moving too slowly to address the potential for flooding that could paralyze transportation, cripple the low-lying financial district and temporarily drive hundreds of thousands of people from their homes" (Navarro).

Climate Casino Graphs

Hi my name is Tiffany Collazo and my purpose for this blog is to further explain the graph that is shown above. In English 101 we are discussing the effects of climate change as well as what causes it. In doing so we are reading a book called “The Climate Casino” by William D. Nordhaus. The graph that you see before you is pulled from the book.
In Figure 2 which can be found on page 21 of the book "The Climate Casino" the graph shows the global emissions and the trend between the years of 1900-2010. Throughout the years you are able to tel that the amount of CO2 emissions as well as the trend has increased drastically. Between the years of 1900-1945 you are able to see that the global emissions did have its downfall as well as its uprise. However in the year 1960 the amount of emission never had a downfall.

Steps For The Day

Recently in class we discussed few pages in the book "The Climate Casino". So far the passage that I found most interesting is the passage where they discuss what actions should be taken in order to possibly fix climate change around the world. The step that interested me the most is the point where they discuss increasing prices of carbon dioxide and it being not only a national agreement but on a global agreement. Even though the rise of prices will cause controversy worldwide, it can also help the people of the world have a longer existence.
People all throughout the world have an attitude towards the idea of global warming and refuse to even really listen and pay close attention to what is really going on. Life isnt full rainbows, everything cant always be simple. Global warming is a serious matter that needs to be addressed and if this step actually goes into effect and all actions are done than we are one step closer to actually solving the climate change problem. Humans are all selfish and no one can say that they aren't because they are. We all need to step out of our selfish bubble and start to actually care what is going on in the world.
